A new initiative has been launched by the Club to commemorate the contributions of every player to have ever represented us in a senior competitive fixture.
Launched today (Thursday 25 October), our Legacy Numbers initiative has seen every player in our history since our first recorded senior competitive game – an FA Cup tie with West Herts on 13 October, 1884 – assigned their own unique number, denoting their place in the history of Tottenham Hotspur.
Following extensive research from Club historians, 879 legacy numbers have now been assigned. Allocated to a player following their maiden appearance for the Club, numbers 1-11 were assigned alphabetically to the players who made up our first starting XI 139 years ago in that FA Cup tie with West Herts.
The latest legacy number, 879, belongs to Alejo Veliz, who became our latest debutant as he came off the bench to play his part in our dramatic late, late win over Liverpool at the end of September.
From our next Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Friday 27 October onwards, all current players will wear their unique legacy number on the back of their match shirts, just beneath the collar
During the research process, specific criteria was applied to ensure each player has been attributed the correct legacy number, which include:
- Players making their full debuts in the same game are listed alphabetically
- Players coming on as substitutes in the same game are listed in order of the minute in which they entered the pitch
- Players coming on as substitutes in the same minute are listed in order in which they entered the pitch
In addition, expunged matches have not counted towards the initiative. These include the three Division Two games in 1939/40, which were expunged when football was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Second World War. Also, matches against Brighton United and Cowes in 1899/00, which were expunged after both teams resigned from the Southern League before the end of the season have not been counted.
An original FA Cup tie against Vampires in 1895/96 – which had to be replayed as the pitch was marked incorrectly – however, does count for this list.

170. Walter
Tull
The first black outfield player in the Football League, Walter Tull was a trailblazer in English football. Playing in our first-ever matches in the Football League, he later enlisted in the British Army as the Great War engulfed the continent. In the conflict, he became the first British-born black combat officer in the British Army, fought twice at the Somme, before he sadly lost his life in ‘no-man’s land’ on 25 March, 1918.

306. Arthur Rowe
Tottenham born and bred, Arthur Rowe was Spurs through and through. Having progressed through our youth ranks to become a first team player, Arthur helped us return to England’s top flight in 1933. It was as our manager though where Rowe left his lasting legacy. Implementing his now famed ‘push and run’ tactic, he led us to the 1949/50 Second Division Championship in his first ever season before steering us to our first-ever top-flight title the very next season.

354. Bill Nicholson
To be forever known as ‘Mr Tottenham’, Bill Nicholson’s contribution to our Club will surely never be surpassed. Arriving in 1936 as a teenage member of the groundstaff, Bill later became a player and was part of Arthur Rowe’s historic 1950/51 First Division title winning side. In 1958, he became our manager and, over a period of ‘glory, glory’ years, he led us to eight major honours, including the 1960/61 Double.

649. Ledley King
Amodern-day legend, Ledley King is one of the greatest defenders to wear the Lilywhite shirt. A product of our youth system, ‘The King’ quickly progressed into our first team and went on to become captain. He led us to our latest major honour – the 2008 League Cup – and to Champions League qualification for the first time in 2010.
