Troy Deeney Urges Tottenham to Target Premier League Attacker Amid Solanke Links
Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer activities have intensified, with the club reportedly in advanced talks to sign Dominic Solanke from AFC Bournemouth.
The former Liverpool striker, who has a £65 million release clause, has emerged as a prime target for the North London side as they seek to bolster their forward options.

Speaking on TalkSport, Deeney offered his perspective on Tottenham’s reported interest in Solanke. The pundit suggested that if Spurs are prepared to spend £65 million, they would be better off investing that sum in Brentford’s Ivan Toney, a player who has been linked with numerous clubs this summer.
Deeney explained, “I’m not sure about Solanke. I think he works better at somewhere like Arsenal, where he has to be on the end of something. I think if you are going to spend £65m, which is the reported fee, I would be expecting, if they can get him, to go for Toney.”
Deeney highlighted the potential benefits of bringing Toney to Tottenham, stating, “He would have Son [Heung-min] running in behind, he lets [James] Maddison come off the front. I just think if you are going to put £65m down, why not just test the waters with Brentford? Leave it on the table for a week.”
The former Watford striker praised Solanke’s development, acknowledging that he has become a good player after learning the hard way through challenging experiences at Liverpool.
However, Deeney expressed doubts about Solanke’s killer instinct, saying, “Whenever I watch Dominic, and I think he’s a good player, I still don’t see the killer in him. He has scored a lot of goals, but I don’t think it’s everything for him to score a goal.”
Toney Would Be Better Suited for Spurs Over Solanke
Phil Foden recently lauded Toney as “unbelievable,” and there is growing anticipation that the Brentford forward could be on the move before the transfer window closes. With Tottenham already linked with Toney earlier in the summer, Deeney’s suggestion raises questions about why Spurs have not yet made a formal move for the Brentford striker.
Toney’s playing style and proven Premier League record could make him a better fit for Tottenham’s tactical setup. His ability to link play, combined with his goal-scoring prowess, would provide a dynamic option alongside Son and Maddison.
Given Tottenham’s willingness to meet Solanke’s £65 million release clause, there is a strong argument for the club to explore a similar bid for Toney.
