Report: Celtic make enquiry to Ajax for Dutch international defender, club open to offers

Celtic are actively pursuing a left-back this summer, with manager Brendan Rodgers keen to add competition for Greg Taylor. Currently, the only backup for the Scotland international is the inexperienced Matthew Anderson, as Alexandro Bernabei is out on loan in Brazil. Strengthening this position has become a key priority as the transfer window enters its final stages. While Celtic have been linked with players like Hugo Bueno and Owen Beck, no deals have materialized so far.

However, a new name has emerged on Celtic’s radar as they look to Eredivisie giants Ajax for potential reinforcements.

Celtic Express Interest in Owen Wijndal

According to Sky Sports, Celtic and Werder Bremen have both made initial inquiries to Ajax regarding defender Owen Wijndal. Ajax is reportedly open to offers for the player, who spent last season on loan at Royal Antwerp in Belgium.

Wijndal is under contract with Ajax until 2027, so any potential move by Celtic might involve a loan-to-buy arrangement. This development is promising for the Bhoys as they seek to fill a crucial gap in their squad.

Wijndal’s Career So Far

Wijndal began his senior career at AZ Alkmaar, where he made 143 appearances and became a standout performer during the 2021/22 season, contributing 12 assists. His impressive form caught the attention of Ajax, who secured his services for £8.5 million. Wijndal made 32 appearances for Ajax before being loaned to Royal Antwerp.

His performances at AZ Alkmaar also earned him international recognition, with 11 caps for the Netherlands in 2020 and 2021. Last season, Wijndal featured 40 times for Antwerp, including six starts in the Champions League group stages, where he played a key role in their 3-2 victory over Barcelona on the final matchday.

With his strong profile and proven experience, Wijndal would be a direct competitor for Taylor’s spot in the starting eleven. As the transfer window draws to a close, this will be an intriguing story to follow.
