Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of Wilson Odobert from Burnley, although the £30 million transfer came with surprisingly little fanfare initially.
Spurs acquired the talented 19-year-old French winger for an initial fee of £25 million, with an additional £5 million potentially coming through add-ons. Odobert has signed a contract that keeps him at the club until 2029, and he’ll be wearing the number 28 shirt, previously worn by fellow Frenchman Tanguy Ndombele.
Odobert, who can operate on either wing, as an attacking midfielder, or even through the middle, made 29 appearances in the Premier League last season despite his young age, recording three goals and three assists. Notably, he registered the most successful dribbles by a teenager in the Premier League and ranked fourth in Europe’s top five leagues with 53 successful dribbles.
After scoring for Burnley against Luton earlier in the week, Odobert is set to bring his pace, dribbling skills, and versatility to Tottenham under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou.
However, the announcement of his signing was rather low-key. There were no prior leaks or teasers from the club, and the news seemed to catch many off guard when it was quietly released on Friday morning. Even Odobert himself kept things understated, merely updating his Instagram bio to reflect his move to Spurs without any formal posts about leaving Burnley or joining Tottenham.
It wasn’t until seven hours later that Tottenham released more information, finally revealing Odobert in his new kit through a humorous video that acknowledged the long wait.
In the latest episode of the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Spurs correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest delved into Odobert’s transfer, the unusual way it was announced, and what the young attacker will bring to the club. They also discussed Jamie Donley’s new contract and loan move to Leyton Orient, as well as what else might be on the horizon for Tottenham in the transfer window.
