Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is still assessing his squad as the new season rapidly approaches. Spurs are set to kick off their Premier League campaign at the King Power Stadium against newly promoted Leicester City on Monday night.
Postecoglou has already made some eye-catching signings, with Dominic Solanke and Archie Gray drawing significant attention from both social media and football pundits. At the same time, the club has offloaded several fringe players, aligning with the tactical needs of the Greek-Australian coach. The loyal Spurs fanbase is brimming with anticipation for the new season, eager to see continued progress under Postecoglou, who has made his ambitions clear since taking charge last summer.
Last season, Spurs secured a Europa League spot, marking their return to European competition. To maintain their push for a top-four finish and challenge for trophies, Postecoglou knows he needs a strong squad with depth.
Players returning from loan spells were given a chance to impress during the pre-season tour. Djed Spence took full advantage of this opportunity, delivering standout performances in the friendlies. Reflecting on Spence’s progress, Postecoglou said, “When you start pre-season, you have a few guys who were out on loan last year. You wonder if they’ve improved and if they can now fit into what we’re trying to do. With Djed, I kept an open mind. His characteristics seem to align with our football, and after a strong pre-season, he’s integrated well into the group.”
Tottenham had considered AS Monaco’s Vanderson as a potential replacement for Spence if he failed to impress during pre-season. However, Spence, earning just £25,000 per week, has proven himself as a more viable option, potentially saving the club from splashing out on a secondary choice. Reports suggest that Spurs have submitted an official bid of around €32 million for the Brazilian.
Pedro Porro remains the first-choice right-back under Postecoglou, playing a crucial role in the team’s tactics. However, with Spence showing his quality and maturity, he could serve as an ideal backup, providing the necessary competition to keep Porro performing at his best. Given the long season ahead, Spence is likely to receive ample game time to silence his critics and cement his place in the squad.
Archie Gray, who can also fill in as a right-back, adds further depth to the flank for the upcoming season. Postecoglou’s emphasis on squad depth is clear, and Spence’s resurgence should inspire other fringe and academy players to follow his lead and work hard to earn their spot.
