Kyle Shanahan isn’t at all worried about Brock Purdy’s playing time during the preseason.
In an interview with KNBR’s “Tolbert & Copes” on Wednesday, Shanahan addressed the criticism surrounding Purdy’s appearance in a preseason game without most of San Francisco’s first-team offense.
“I understand what people are saying, but sometimes I think it’s just a bit overblown,” Shanahan remarked.
“Obviously, if we thought there was a situation where Brock couldn’t protect himself or the other guys couldn’t match up, we wouldn’t have done it. But that wasn’t the case. We valued the reps Brock got, and he was eager to be out there.
“He played alongside what could be our two starting tackles, our starting center, and our starting right guard…These are all NFL-caliber players, so I didn’t see any issue with the offensive line. In fact, I thought they held up pretty well and did a solid job in that game.”
Some critics labeled Shanahan “crazy” for starting Purdy without Trent Williams in the lineup to protect him. On “Tolbert & Copes,” Shanahan offered his perspective in response.
