‘I’ve faced both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer – it’s clear who the better player is

Tennis star Radu Albot’s prediction about the challenge of facing Novak Djokovic over Roger Federer was confirmed during his recent US Open match. The 34-year-old earned his spot in the main draw after winning three qualifying rounds, leading to his first-ever encounter with Djokovic. Coming off a triumphant Olympic gold win for Serbia, Djokovic was in peak form, making the match even more daunting for Albot. The clash at Arthur Ashe Stadium ended in a straight-sets victory for Djokovic (6-2, 6-2, 6-4).

Albot, who has faced tennis legends before—including two matches against Federer—admitted before his US Open match that Djokovic posed a greater challenge. Speaking to We Love Tennis, the former world No. 39 stated, “I’m aware that Novak is a tougher opponent than Federer, whom I’ve faced twice.” Competing in his 30th Grand Slam, Albot had never faced a major champion until now. Although he managed to take a set off Federer in their previous Miami match, Albot knew that his encounter with Djokovic would be a tougher battle, a belief that was validated by the straight-sets loss.

Reflecting on his experience, Albot explained that his matches against Federer and other top players had prepared him for the challenges ahead. “Playing against Federer helped me understand what to expect from the crowd and the experience of facing one of the greatest of all time,” Albot told the ATP Tour. “When I played against Roger, I went in with the mindset to win, not just to take a game or a set. But Novak is more complex. He’s physically strong, moves exceptionally well, and has great shots from both wings, a powerful serve, and solid net play.”

Albot acknowledged the unique challenges of a five-set match, emphasizing the importance of mental preparation and adaptability. Despite the tough draw, Albot remained focused on representing Moldova with pride and refused to dwell on the difficulty of the match.

“I’m not going to complain about being unlucky,” Albot said. “I’m excited for the challenge and eager to see how I can perform, especially on a big court with a full house. I’ve received a lot of support from back home, and I’m committed to giving my best effort.”

Though Albot was defeated in the first round, he walked away with a $100,000 (£76,853) prize, while Djokovic advanced to face fellow Serb Laslo Djere in the second round.
