Reported Liverpool target Kylian Mbappe is set to reject a new contract offer from PSG and leave the club next year.
Yes, it’s that time again. Despite signing a new, two-season deal 12 months ago, Mbappe is once again deliberating his future in Paris. And according to L’Equipe, this time he’s hell-bent on leaving the French champions.
As relayed by Spanish outlet Cadena SER, the 24-year-old will reject the option of extending his current contract to 2025. Consequently, Mbappe is now set to enter the final 12 months of his deal – with the intention of leaving on a free next summer.
L’Equipe claim that although PSG aren’t too worried about this eventuality – indeed, they’ve been here before – there is interest from elsewhere. Most notably, that interest is said to come from England. Liverpool are named as the club who are ‘historically the most insistent.’ It’s claimed that the Reds even asked about signing Mbappe late in the summer of 2022.
Manchester United are another who reportedly could look into signing the Frenchman if their takeover is completed. Finally, as we know, there is another side intrinsically linked with Kylian Mbappe: Real Madrid. However, as per Cadena SER’s report, the Spanish giants’ priorities now lie elsewhere.
It reportedly isn’t out of the question that they return for the man who rejected them in 2022. But right now, they’re focused on bringing in Jude Bellingham and continuing to develop Vinicius Jnr.
Mbappe buckles up for another saga
Here we go again! It wouldn’t be a transfer window, or the lead-up to a transfer window, without a Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool story.
It might be that the Reds do end up signing the superstar. If he’s available on a free next summer instead of the reported £352m price-tag PSG put on him after a falling out last year [The Athletic], then it’s certainly more of a possibility.
But even then, we just can’t see it happening. At all.
If reports are to be believed, then that won’t be down to a lack of interest, from both parties. Clearly, if a player like Mbappe is a genuine possibility, then you have to be interested. He has his flaws, but he’s one of the most devastating players on the planet. From the player’s point of view, his mother is well-known to be a Liverpool fan.
With Madrid seemingly out of the running for now, there remains a real lack of options for Mbappe should he leave PSG. The World Cup winner is said to be attracted to the idea of playing for Jurgen Klopp and why wouldn’t he be?
Obviously, any kind of move would hinge on Liverpool being back in the Champions League. But by the time summer 2024 rolls around, hopefully they will be.
So, as much as we’re pained to, and as impossible as it may seem, we’re going to have to keep an eye on this one aren’t we. It simply won’t go away. Until Kylian pens another extension at his hometown club, it’s unlikely that it will.
