Racing legend to return for NASCAR playoff race after 10-year absence

A familiar face will be back behind the wheel when the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Watkins Glen International on September 15.

Juan Pablo Montoya is set to return to NASCAR for the second playoff race, driving the No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota. This entry celebrates Mobil 1’s 50th anniversary.

At 48 years old, Montoya hasn’t competed in the Cup Series since 2014, when he was with Team Penske.

After hinting at the announcement on social media Thursday, 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, confirmed it officially on Friday, August 2.

“I’m excited for the opportunity and believe we’ll be well-prepared,” Montoya said in the video.

“I want to do it and feel I can be quite competitive. Given my experience at Watkins Glen, I think it should go well.”

Along with two career Cup Series wins, Montoya has also earned a NASCAR Xfinity Series win, seven Formula One victories, and 15 IndyCar wins.
