Tottenham have informed player he has fallen down the pecking order, insider reveals

Tottenham Hotspur may be preparing to offload goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman before the transfer window closes, as revealed by Spurs insider John Wenham.

Wenham has pointed out that Whiteman’s future at the club appears uncertain, particularly with Brandon Austin now seemingly ahead of him in the goalkeeping hierarchy.

Wenham noted that Tottenham’s recent pre-season tour has clarified the club’s stance, with Austin featuring in all five of the team’s matches, while Whiteman made only a brief substitute appearance.

Given that Whiteman has just one year left on his current contract, this summer may present the best opportunity for both him and the club to consider a transfer.

Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said:

“It seems as though Whiteman might also be moved on. I think it has been made clear to him that Austin is in front of him in the pecking order at the club.”

“He has a year to go on his contract and this might therefore be the best time for him to move on from Tottenham. I think some real pecking order decisions were made on this recent pre-season tour.”

Whiteman has been part of Tottenham’s setup since joining their academy in 2015. In February 2023, he signed a contract extension that runs until next year. However, his chances to shine for the first team have been limited.

His most significant appearance for Spurs came in a UEFA Europa League match against Ludogorets Razgrad in 2020, where he was brought on as a substitute. Additionally, he gained experience during two loan spells at Swedish side Degerfors.

With Guglielmo Vicario solidifying his position as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper and with Fraser Forster and Brandon Austin as reliable backups, Whiteman’s path to the first team looks increasingly difficult.

Therefore, allowing Whiteman to move on could be beneficial, providing him with the chance for regular playing time while enabling Spurs to reallocate resources toward other squad needs.
