North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball fans are beginning to panic as another major roster blow could be on the horizon following the transfer departure of Maxim Logue.
Now, all eyes are on Matt Able — and his NBA Draft rise is creating serious concern around Michael Malone’s rebuilding project at North Carolina.
The talented 6-foot-5 guard, who transferred from NC State Wolfpack men’s basketball in April, remains committed to UNC for now. However, his growing NBA Draft stock is threatening to completely change those plans.
Able recently secured an invitation to the NBA Draft Combine, and while many insiders still expect him to return to college basketball, his latest comments have sparked fear among Tar Heel supporters.
“The reason I’m training this hard is because playing in the NBA has always been my dream,” Able said during an interview with No Ceilings.
He also spoke emotionally about wanting to provide for his family and make his childhood dream a reality — words that sounded far more like a player preparing to leave than one planning a college return.
Fans also noticed another detail that quickly fueled speculation: Able appeared in NC State gear during the interview, despite already committing to North Carolina.
For many supporters, that raised fresh doubts about how committed he truly is to becoming a Tar Heel.
At the moment, UNC’s hopes could depend entirely on Able’s performance at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. ESPN currently projects him as a second-round selection, but if his stock rises into the first round, the chances of him staying in the draft could skyrocket.
That would leave North Carolina scrambling to replace a projected starting shooting guard at a time when most top transfer options are already off the market.
For Tar Heel fans, what once looked like a massive transfer win is now beginning to feel like a looming nightmare.
