Jimmy Connors was one of those who expressed about Novak Djokovic’s success at the Olympic Games against Carlos Alcara.
In his podcast Advantage Connors, the American commented on the sense of value of the gold medal won by the 24-time Slam champion. Nole has long pursued this milestone, the last great title that was still missing from his glorious collection.
The former American tennis player he explained how, in his opinion, the Olympic gold was the crowning achievement of an extraordinary career for Djokovic.
“This gold medal is probably as important to him as his first Wimbledon or US Open, because he did the others, you know, he won all the Grand Slams and many other tournaments. But winning the gold medal, for him, is like the icing on the cake,” commented the American.
Connors then added: “Almost three hours of play, 7-6(3), 7-6(2), the kind of tennis they produced, what do you expect?”
Now there will be a long and deserved rest for the whole Serbian to arrive at Flushing Meadows in search of his 25th Major. Djokovic’s year has zero ATP titles, as never happened in the last 19 years of his career, but it will probably be remembered by the Serbian champion as one of the most positive since he started playing tennis.
Thanks to that Olympic gold medal chased all that he desire in his life, caressed but always eluded. Until this edition in Paris, where Nole finally managed to put the most precious metal around his neck, despite a physical condition that is still not entirely optimal after the meniscus surgery.
The Parisian efforts forced him to give up the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, a tournament in which he triumphed in the last edition and of which he will not defend the 1000 points won. The Serbian tennis player should return to the court for the last Slam of the year, at the US Open, a Major in which he will defend his title, to try not to interrupt a streak of six consecutive seasons with at least one Slam under his belt.
