Simon Jordan responds to controversial Tottenham announcement with transfer point

Simon Jordan has hit back at Tottenham Hotspur supporters who have criticised the club for raising season ticket prices by six per cent.

The Lilywhites are battling to qualify for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League and some fans are outraged that such a hike has been introduced by the club’s hierarchy in recent weeks. It was announced that Spurs are also removing the concession for new senior season ticket holders – those aged 65 and above – from 2025-26.

Having moved to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in 2019, the Lilywhites parted with around £1 billion to finance the build of their new state-of-the-art ground. Jordan, meanwhile, reckons a price hike is needed due to the current economic climate and the aspirations for the club under chairman Daniel Levy.

Tottenham fans are up in arms at news that the price of their season tickets will rise by six per cent this summer,” began the former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan via in his Daily Mail column.. “Everything from the price of a pint of milk to a loaf of bread has gone up due to inflation so why should football be immune to it?”

Football is not a charity. A season ticket is not something you are obliged to have. Now I do of course realise that football is hugely important to many people but the reality is that it is a business.

The club have increased ticket prices just once in five years since they moved to the new stadium so it might have been more palatable to have a yearly price rise of one per cent rather than six per cent in one hit but this is the nature of the beast I’m afraid.

“Tottenham have built a wonderful new stadium, have better players and better opportunities on the pitch. After 16 years without a trophy, Spurs fans want to see their team win something. If raising ticket prices is going to contribute to Tottenham perhaps one day winning the Premier League, where’s the argument?”
