Rafael Nadal has been urged to retire immediately following a disappointing performance at the Olympics.
Nadal recently competed in the Paris Olympics, teaming up with Carlos Alcaraz in a much-anticipated doubles partnership known as ‘Nadalcaraz.’ Despite their formidable pairing, the Spanish duo fell short, losing in the quarter-finals to the American team of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram, who went on to win the silver medal.
Nadal also participated in the singles event at Roland-Garros but was eliminated in the second round by Novak Djokovic. Following these setbacks, Express Sport readers believe it might be time for Nadal to retire. A significant 74% of respondents in a poll agreed that the Olympics should mark the end of his illustrious career, though Nadal has remained noncommittal about his future.
In response to a question about his potential retirement, a visibly frustrated Nadal said, “You want me to retire every day, guys; you ask me that all the time. I’m just trying to do my best. I can’t live every day wondering if it’s going to be my last match.”
However, the signs suggest that Nadal’s retirement could be approaching, especially after the 38-year-old recently announced his withdrawal from the US Open.
In a social media post, Nadal shared, “Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open, a place where I have amazing memories. I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time. Thanks to all my US fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of luck to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin.”
