Shanahan explains what Aiyuk’s presence means for contract situation

LAS VEGAS  Brandon Aiyuk traveled with the San Francisco 49ers for their final preseason game, sparking questions about his standing with the team.

However, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, Aiyuk’s status remains uncertain. After a 24-24 tie with the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, Shanahan was asked if Aiyuk’s trip clarified his role on the team. “Nope,” Shanahan simply replied.

So, why did Aiyuk make the trip?

“Anyone who’s on our team, we want them to make the trip, especially if we think they’re healthy,” Shanahan explained. “That’s why we had him do it.”

Aiyuk is currently under contract for $14.124 million with the 49ers this season, but that figure is well below his market value. The 49ers and Aiyuk’s representatives have been negotiating a new contract, and the team has reportedly engaged in trade talks with at least three other teams—the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and New England Patriots.

Despite the ongoing contract negotiations, Shanahan doesn’t see Aiyuk’s situation as a distraction. Aiyuk reported to training camp on time to avoid fines but has not practiced, participating in a “hold-in” while still attending meetings.

With the regular season opener against the New York Jets on Monday, Sept. 9, it’s uncertain how Aiyuk’s limited participation in the offseason program and training camp will affect his performance.

Quarterback Brock Purdy hasn’t thrown to Aiyuk this offseason but remains confident in their ability to reconnect on the field quickly. “I’d be confident in us being able to pick up where we left off,” Purdy said. “I’ve been throwing to him for two years, and now going on three, understanding our plays, our concepts, where he needs to be, where the receiver needs to be. I’d be pretty confident in him coming back and us being on the same page.”

Aiyuk led the 49ers in receptions and receiving yards over the past two seasons, earning AP second-team All-Pro honors last season with 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. Whether he continues that form this season remains to be seen.
