Tennis star Radu Albot has squared off against two of the sport’s legends, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, and he considers Djokovic his toughest opponent.
At 34, Albot made it to the US Open main draw through a series of three qualifying victories and was rewarded with a match against Djokovic. This encounter was their first meeting, with Djokovic coming off his Olympic gold medal triumph in Paris.
Albot faced Djokovic at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the defending US Open champion claimed a straight-sets victory (6-2, 6-2, 6-4). Although it was Albot’s 30th Grand Slam appearance, he had previously faced Federer twice, even managing to take a set off the Swiss star during their 2019 Miami Open match.
Reflecting on his experiences, Albot told We Love Tennis that Djokovic was a more formidable opponent than Federer. “I’m aware that Novak is a tougher opponent than Federer, whom I’ve faced twice,” Albot said. Despite his experiences with Federer, Albot’s belief that Djokovic presented a greater challenge was confirmed at the US Open.
Albot noted that his past matches against Federer and other top players helped prepare him for the encounter with Djokovic. “Playing against Federer helped me understand what to expect from a great player, and it also prepared me for the crowd and the experience,” Albot said. “When I faced Roger, my goal was to win. I didn’t think about just getting a game or a set. Against Novak, it’s different. He’s a complex player with exceptional physical attributes, strong shots on both wings, a powerful serve, and solid net play.”
He acknowledged the unique challenges of a five-set match, emphasizing the need for mental preparation and adaptability. Despite the daunting challenge of facing Djokovic, Albot was determined to represent Moldova proudly at the US Open and remained focused on the opportunity rather than dwelling on his tough draw.
“I’m not going to complain about being unlucky,” Albot said. “I’m excited for the challenge and eager to see how I can perform, especially on a big court with a full house. I’ve received a lot of support from back home, and I’m committed to giving my best effort.”
Although Albot exited in the first round, he earned $100,000 (£76,853) for his efforts, while Djokovic progressed to the next round to face Laslo Djere.
