Wednesday signaled the beginning of a new chapter for the Boston Bruins. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Marco Sturm, the team had the opportunity to move past last season’s disappointing performance and start fresh.
To open the 2025-26 season, Boston faced a challenging road game against the Washington Capitals, who were last year’s Metropolitan Division champions and one of the NHL’s top teams. As a result, the Bruins entered the season opener as clear underdogs in the nation’s capital.
Despite this, Boston pulled off an unexpected 3-1 win over the Capitals at Capital One Arena, securing two points to kick off their season.
After a scoreless first period, the Bruins broke through in the middle of the second period with David Pastrnak scoring his first goal of the season.
Tom Wilson evened the score for Washington seven minutes into the third period, but Boston quickly regained the lead just 38 seconds later with a power play goal by Elias Lindholm. Morgan Geekie sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
As anticipated, Pastrnak spearheaded the offense, racking up three points by scoring one goal and assisting on two others. Meanwhile, Jeremy Swayman was outstanding in goal, stopping 35 of 36 shots faced.
