The Texas Rangers showcased an impressive pitching staff throughout the 2025 season, highlighted by a bounce-back year from Jacob deGrom and a Cy Young-caliber performance from Nathan Eovaldi.
However, Eovaldi’s bid for serious Cy Young consideration was hampered by injuries, limiting him to just 22 starts and 130 innings. Still, he delivered an exceptional season, finishing with an 11-3 record, a 1.73 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 129 strikeouts, 21 walks, 10 home runs allowed, and a 2.80 FIP.
Late in the season, Eovaldi was diagnosed with a strained rotator cuff, placing him on the 60-day injured list in August and ending his 2025 campaign. While there were hopes for a full recovery by next season, new concerns emerged earlier in the week when he was being evaluated for another injury.
It has now been confirmed that Eovaldi recently underwent surgery.
Per a report from Jeff Wilson of alldlls.com, later confirmed by ESPN, Eovaldi had sports hernia surgery this past Wednesday following evaluations earlier in the week.
The timeline for his recovery is encouraging, with expectations that he’ll return in time for the start of the 2026 season. If everything goes to plan, he should be able to complete most, if not all, of a normal offseason program.
Recovery from sports hernia surgery typically takes six to eight weeks, and the Rangers are optimistic Eovaldi will be fully ready, with both the shoulder and hernia issues behind him.
This is great news for Texas, who would benefit greatly from another strong season from Eovaldi—ideally one where he’s healthy for a longer stretch. Giving him adequate recovery time is key, and the short recovery window bodes well.
Eovaldi had been relatively healthy in recent years, making 29 starts in 2024 and 25 in 2023. But at 35, injuries are beginning to surface more frequently. Fortunately, it appears he’s on track to return as the ace of the Rangers’ rotation to open the 2026 season.
