‘It will damage my career if I join Tottenham’ – Exclusive: Top manager target tells friends

Julian Nagelsmann fears it could “damage my career” if he joins Tottenham, sources have told Football Insider.

The 35-year-old is one of the leading candidates to take over at the north Londoners in the summer, as they start their search for a new full-time manager.

The club ended Antonio Conte’s reign on Monday after 16 months and appointed Cristian Stellini in caretaker charge for their last 10 matches of the campaign.

But it is believed by those close to Nagelsmann in Germany that Spurs face a huge task to entice him and it is currently regarded as a long shot.

The former RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim manager has been hit hard by his recent Bayern Munich sacking and rumours that senior players at the club had turned against him.

It has been said in Germany that a player revolt was partially responsible for his dismissal nine days ago despite losing just 10 of his 84 games in charge of the giants during his two-year reign.

Nagelsmann is not privately convinced that Tottenham would be the right next move for him, according to sources in Germany, and fears “it will damage my career” if he were to take over in the summer.

He believes Spurs is not the ideal fit for him at this stage as he wants to take over a team where he can compete immediately for trophies and make an immediate impact.

News of Tottenham’s interest in Nagelsmann is believed to have been welcomed by club talisman Harry Kane – who could be tempted to stay at the club if the German is appointed.

Spurs attempted to appoint Nagelsmann in 2021 following the sacking of Jose Mourinho – but ended up with the short-lived reign of Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Londoners remain in fourth place but have played more games than top-four rivals Newcastle and Liverpool as the Premier League run-in approaches.
