Alasdair Gold has spoken about Tottenham Hotspur’s highly-rated star Destiny Udogie, as he prepares to return from his loan spell at Udinese.
The 20-year-old secured a £15 million transfer to Tottenham last summer (Sky Sports), before being loaned back to Udinese in Serie A.
Football London journalist Gold has shared that he has heard from some coaches that Destiny Udogie needs to ‘improve’ on his defending, as he told his own YouTube channel.
The all-action left-back has enjoyed a fruitful spell for a Udinese side that is set to secure a bottom-half finish in the Serie A this term.
From his 32 league games, he has scored three goals and supplied four assists, including standout performances against Napoli and AC Milan – games in which Udinese picked up four points.
But, come next season, will he be a first-team player for Tottenham? Well, he needs to know who his new manager is going to be, first of all, as Gold shared his thoughts on the left-sided fullback.
“Don’t forget Destiny Udogie is coming in as well,” said Gold. “A 20-year-old. He is another one, like Porro, we are going to have to see, if someone plays a back four, can he play as a left-back? My thinking is that he probably can.
“One thing I have seen coaches say is that one thing he does have to improve on is his defending. But I do think maybe slightly less of the flying wingback that Porro is, maybe he is somewhere in between, so it might be easier for him to become that left-back rather than become a left-winger.
“So add him to the mix as well.”
UDOGIE DESERVES HIS TOTTENHAM CHANCE
From the middle of the park to the man in between the sticks, there have been many problem areas for Tottenham this season after they failed to secure Europe.
Another area that caused them issues this term was the left-back or left-wing-back role. From the injury-prone Ryan Sessegnon, the experienced campaigner Ivan Perisic to Wales international, Ben Davies.
They have all been uninspiring in that role, so when Udogie returns next season, even if there is a rawness to his game, he should be coached and developed into that role by his new manager.
