Jurgen Klopp reportedly wants to add to his defence after sorting out Liverpool’s midfield, with a signing for the back line expected to be made.
According to the Times, after overhauling the Reds’ midfield, the German manager is keen to bring in a defensive signing likely to act as cover for the centre-back and right-back positions, with Trent Alexander-Arnold in need of a senior backup for next season.
Liverpool’s defence has been an odd case this season, and with Joe Gomez expected to leave in the summer, bringing in a replacement that could one-day partner Ibrahima Konate would be a wise use of funds from Klopp after sorting out the midfield.
With Virgil van Dijk also reaching the final years of his peak, sorting out a long-term replacement for this summer could save Liverpool time and money in the seasons to come, especially with the market for young defenders as good as it ever has been.
Indeed, Liverpool have been linked already to the likes of Perr Schuurs and Marc Guehi, and with other names out there in the space like Josko Gvardiol, the Reds can make a big play this summer in signing a defender aged 23 of under.
Liverpool adding to their defence could be as big as midfield signings
The old saying goes that attack wins you games but defence wins you titles, and Liverpool have been the perfect blend of both over the years, yet adding to their backline this summer could be as crucial than Klopp making numerous midfield signings.
As we know, Liverpool are bracing themselves for arguably their biggest summer yet under the German manager, and signing a defender who can star for the club in the years to come could be massive in the Anfield side returning to the top and challenging for every piece of silverware out there.
