Kieran Trippier cruelly reminded of horror own goal after Newcastle star’s gaffe

Kieran Trippier brought Chelsea level against Newcastle with another comical own goal at Stamford Bridge on the final day of the Premier League season.

Kieran Trippier has been cruelly reminded of one of the most embarrassing moments of his career after scoring another own goal at Chelsea.

The Newcastle defender, then of Tottenham, infamously slotted the ball past keeper Hugo Lloris during a game in 2019. And he scored another own goal at Stamford Bridge today when he inadvertently bundled in a cross-shot from Raheem Sterling into his own net.

The goal made it 1-1 after Anthony Gordon’s early strike for Newcastle. Cheeky Chelsea fans, who have endured a wretched season, couldn’t resist lightening the mood by mocking Trippier.

“Kieran Trippier just loves an own goal at Stamford Bridge,” tweeted a fan account with a gif of the OG from 2019.

Another Blues supporter quipped: “Trippier loves an own goal against us.” A third fan joked: “Now when I say I was at the Trippier own goal game, I have to specify.”

A fourth added: “Trippier with an own goal at Stamford Bridge. Where have we seen this before?”

A Spurs fan tweeted: “Trippier own goal vs Chelsea. Us Spurs fans are way too familiar.” Meanwhile, a Newcastle supporter jibed: “Trippier scores an own goal for Chelsea, putting him in contention to be their player of the season.”

The moment came hours after it was reported Chelsea are on the verge of finally confirming the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino. An official announcement is expected at some point in the coming days and could even happen after the Newcastle game.

Pochettino, who has been out of work since leaving PSG a year ago, will take the reins ahead of the 2023/24 season once caretaker Frank Lampard leaves his post at the end of the current campaign.
