Newcastle injury news: The latest updates as Liverpool prepares for a tough clash against the Magpies, with some major potential absentees for Eddie Howe.
Liverpool has enjoyed a relatively successful start to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, with a tough test against Newcastle United now approaching.
Eddie Howe’s men got off to a flying start in their first game, beating Aston Villa 5-1 in the opening game of the season at St James’ Park.
A tough test against treble winners Manchester City then followed, as Pep Guardiola’s side was able to secure all three points in a 1-0 victory thanks to a stunning Julián Álvarez goal.
The Magpies offer a solid test for Jürgen Klopp’s side, which has recorded four points in their first two fixtures against Chelsea and Bournemouth, enough for fifth place ahead of this weekend.
That’s the same place in the table it finished last season, with its upcoming opponent beating it to the final Champions League spot as the Reds had to settle for Europa League action on this occasion.
The clash marks a strong obstacle for both sides, who will both be looking to build on their early successes in their fixtures so far, while laying down a real marker for the campaign.
Here at Liverpool.com, we try to keep you up to date on the latest injury news from both camps ahead of every game. Here’s how things are shaping up for Newcastle ahead of the Reds’ trip to St James’ Park.
The Brazilian has been a revelation at Newcastle since switching to a midfield role under Eddie Howe. However, could be set to miss the clash against Liverpool after picking up an injury against Manchester City.
Joelinton limped off just after 60 minutes and was replaced by Sean Longstaff, with Howe offering the following update after the game. He said: “No, no news. I know what you know. He didn’t move well when he came off the pitch. Fingers crossed he’s OK.”
The 28-year-old has not been pictured in first team training during the build-up to the game, casting doubt over his ability to feature in this fixture.
The former Liverpool defender’s involvement in the first team was already expected to be limited this season. However, a slight groin injury has dampened his chances even further after being sidelined since the opening day clash against Aston Villa.
Howe has spoken to Newcastle World about the injury to Manquillo, where he said: “Just a slight groin complaint with Javier. We hope it’s nothing serious.”
The defender suffered a long-term knee injury last season and is yet to make his return to first team action.
Newcastle has since recruited heavily in the defensive department, adding both Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall in the full-back positions. That may cast doubt over the first team opportunities available to Krafth once he does make a return.
Krafth likened being restricted to gym work only as ‘jail’ (Newcastle Chronicle). While back out on the pitch now, he is yet to return to contention.
Joe Willock, 24, is not expected to feature for Newcastle until after the international break due to a hamstring issue. Speaking on the issue back on August 11, Howe provided the following update on the setback for the midfielder:
“He’s had a really bad hamstring injury. It was a serious injury to his hamstring, he missed the back end of last season and then through pre-season was working back.
“He has just felt a little bit of discomfort in his hamstring, not necessarily another pull to the area, just some discomfort, so we’ve had to lock him down again and he’s in the process now of building himself back up. We will probably miss him for the first group of games before the first international break.”
