Liverpool transfer news: Jürgen Klopp’s side has supposedly got a ‘full agreement’ for one midfielder, but PSG and others could constitute big competition for another.
Liverpool has plenty to think about this summer and both Jürgen Klopp and Jörg Schmadtke will be working hard behind the scenes to get things moving ahead of pre-season.
In an ideal world, by the time pre-season kicks off, Liverpool will have bought at least three players and those new arrivals can then bed in with their teammates for as long a time as possible. Liverpool’s pre-season will begin on July 8, which is just 36 days away.
Liverpool needs to sign at least a couple of players for the center of the pitch by the time the season begins, and in an ideal world, would also have a new defender to add to Klopp’s ranks.
That would make a big difference ahead of next season, when Liverpool needs to get back to being title challengers again and make a good fist of winning at least one of the cup competitions.
Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today, with more updates on Alexis Mac Allister and Khéphren Thuram, who could both supplement Klopp’s midfield significantly.
Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton)
Liverpool wants to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton this summer and the Reds have a ‘full agreement’ to sign the 24-year-old, according to Football Insider, after activating his release
It is not clear exactly what the exit clause constitutes, with David Ornstein reporting in The Athletic last month that there was some form of ‘mechanism’ but that it wasn’t a typical release clause.
It does feel like a move for Mac Allister is very possible, but quite whether it is actually done yet might be a stretch. Sky Sports reported in May that Brighton wants $88m (£70m/€82m) for the Argentine.
Liverpool.com says: Mac Allister would be an excellent start to the summer for Liverpool in terms of incomings. He won’t solve all of Klopp’s problems but he is versatile enough to slot into a variety of roles and would instantly provide an upgrade.
Khéphren Thuram (Nice)
Liverpool is interested in signing Nice midfielder Khéphren Thuram but Newcastle United, Chelsea and PSG are also keen on the player, according to i News.
“I want to progress, go on the field, have fun,” Thuram said recently (via One Football) on his future. “For now, I’m in Nice. It’s going very well. I really like the club, so I still see myself in Nice. I am very well in Nice.”
Thuram, 22, is a highly-rated player with plenty of interest and whether or not Liverpool or any other side gets a deal over the line, he will not be staying a the Ligue 1 outfit for long.
Liverpool.com says: Thuram would be an excellent addition in the center of the pitch for Liverpool, with fresh legs vital in that area of the pitch. Along with Mac Allister, those two deals would go a long way toward fixing a big issue for Klopp ahead of next season.
