Newcastle fend off Premier League competition to sign Yankuba Minteh

Newcastle United are closing in on their first signing of the summer, with Yankuba Minteh set to join the club.

The news broke in Denmark on Friday morning that the Magpies are closing in on a £6million deal for the 18-year-old who currently plays for Odense BK.

Minteh has been linked with a move to the North East since April, and has even spoke about his desire to join Eddie Howe’s side.

Now it looks like that is going to become a reality, with just a medical standing between Minteh becoming a Newcastle United player.

It already looks like the club have plans for the teenager. It has been reported that Newcastle are going to loan out Minteh, but it remains unclear where.

He is obviously a player for the future given his age and limited experience in European football, but Newcastle appear to have stolen a march on some of their Premier League rivals when it comes to the young attacker.

Newcastle fend off Brighton and Everton interest to land Minteh
According to 90min, Newcastle were not the only Premier League club that were interested in Minteh. They report that both Brighton and Everton were admirers of the Gambia Under-20 international.

He was also attracting interest from Ajax, Club Brugge, Feyenoord and Marseille.

Given Brighton’s recent record of signing youngsters, Newcastle will no doubt be delighted that they have won the race to secure Minteh’s signature – well, almost. A deal appears to be all but done, but it is still not official.

With multiple Premier League clubs watching Minteh, there is a clear belief that he can thrive in English football’s top flight. He has been described as a ‘special‘ player, and Dan Ashworth will hope that eventually proves to be the case in a black and white shirt.

This is the type of signing that the club needs to make. We cannot afford to just buy the finished product, we need to bring some players in before they truly burst into life. It is much more cost effective.

It is a blueprint that Brighton have used brilliantly, and now we look set to beat them to a player they were targeting.
