Report: Tottenham player clueless why Conte dropped him after Arsenal game

According to The Athletic, Matt Doherty did not get any explanation from Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte as to why he was dropped against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City despite playing well against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Doherty left Tottenham for former La Liga champions Atletico Madrid on loan in the January transfer window.

The deal happened on the final day of the January window.

The move came as a surprise, as there was no rumour in the days building up to the transfer.

The Athletic have now given an insight into how the transfer came about.

In the report, The Athletic have claimed that Republic of Ireland international right-back thought that he had one of his best games of the season against Arsenal in the North London derby.

However, Conte dropped the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star against Manchester City, and the Spurs boss did not explain to Doherty why.

Tottenham lost 2-0 to Arsenal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on January 15.

Then on January 19, Spurs went down 4-2 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

FLOURISHING AT ATLETICO MADRID
In our view, Matt Doherty could flourish at Atletico Madrid and come back to Tottenham Hotspur a better player.

Atletico are one of the biggest clubs in Spain and are aiming to finish in the top four of the La Liga table this season.

We saw how Kieran Trippier became a better right-back after his spell at Atletico.

And Doherty could have a similar trajectory.
