Dani Olmo will not be one of Ange Postecoglou’s first signings at Tottenham Hotspur as the Premier League linked midfielder instead signs a new contract at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.
With speculation growing surrounding the future of Dominik Szoboszlai – and with Christopher Nkunku and Konrad Laimer seemingly destined for Chelsea and Bayern Munich – confirmation over Dani Olmo’s future must have felt like waking up to the smell of bacon and freshly squeezed orange juice as far as Leipzig boss Marco Rose is concerned.
According to BILD, Tottenham opened talks with the Spain international’s camp in April.
Olmo will not be on his way to North London now however – or anywhere else for that matter – after putting pen to paper on a deal which could keep him at the Red Bull Arena until 2027.
Tottenham will not be signing Dani Olmo from Leipzig
“I like that Dani Olmo extended his contract and put out a statement to everybody, to the media,” Rose beams.
Tottenham’s interest in the one-time Barcelona youngster may have been made with the potential appointment of Julian Nagelsmann in mind. Nagelsmann had negotiations with Spurs before Ange Postecoglou eventually got the nod. And he worked with Olmo during a succesful spell in charge at Leipzig.
The 25-year-old also shone under another Spurs-linked manager – Luis Enrique – for Spain.
But while a deal always appeared unlikely once talks with Nagelsmann and Enrique stalled, a midfielder of Olmo’s tenacity, flexibility and poise could still have come in very handy under a coach who – at Celtic – got Tom Rogic, Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate playing the best football of their careers.
Olmo scored five goals and set up 11 more for DFB Pokal winners Leipzig in 2022/23.
“When I came to Leipzig more than three years ago, it was a big step for me,” Olmo smiles. “Everyone here made it very easy for me, I was able to perform straight away.
“RB Leipzig is a fantastic club in a fantastic city with fantastic fans. And I’m really happy about the contract extension.”
