Some Manchester City fans believe Pep Guardiola will hand Stefan Ortega just his second start of the season against Newcastle on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old has only made one appearance so far this term, which came in the FA Community Shield defeat against Arsenal.
So, what have the Manchester City fans been saying about Stefan Ortega? Let’s take a look…
Manchester City fans think Stefan Ortega will start against Newcastle
Well, the German does not feature often for Manchester City – he has only made 15 appearances in total since arriving from Arminia Bielefeld in July 2022.
All but three of those outings have come in cup competitions, with Guardiola handing Ortega the No.1 role in both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup last season.
Now, Manchester City fans believe the Hofgeismar-born glovesman will make just his second appearance of the 2023/24 campaign in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Newcastle.
One supporter wrote that “Ederson needs a rest” when explaining why they think Ortega should be given a starting role at St James’ Park.
Another said that Guardiola should “definitely” start his second choice goalkeeper, while also calling for Kalvin Phillips, Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb to feature.

In truth, it would be a surprise if the Spaniard did not start Ortega, given his status as Manchester City’s goalkeeper for domestic cup competitions.
However, Guardiola may be wary of fielding his No.18, who has little game time under his belt this season, after Newcastle just scored eight goals in their 8-0 win against Sheffield United.
The Magpies could look to take advantage of any potential rustiness from Ortega, so it also wouldn’t surprise us if Guardiola stuck with Ederson given the strength of the opposition.
